Simki Ghebremichael
POET

Simki Ghebremichael publishes her poetry using her Eritrean married name from her first marriage. In the 1980s she helped found Poetry San Francisco and edited the newsletter Interracial Pride in the Bay Area. She received her MFA in Creative Writing from American University in 2010. Her poem “Prague TV” about dissident writers won first prize in the 2010 Split This Rock poetry contest. Her journal excerpt on the start of the Iraq War appears in Keeping Time, an anthology of journal writing from Passager Books. She hosted the Poesis reading series to support poets in the Washington, DC area for a number of years. Her writing has appeared in various journals including Gargoyle, Potomac Review, So To Speak, Capitalism, Nature, Socialism and Hard Times Companion.
